Stove- and Tile-Maker’s Trade
The Tanko Family from the Village of Nemška Vas and Their Stove- and Tile-Maker’s Trade
Three generations of the Tanko family – locally known as Pavelnovi, the Pavels – were tile- and stove-makers. They practiced their trade for more than a hundred years. Their trade started with Pavel, followed by Franc, who was also a potter, and lastly Ignacij, who also made clay nativity figurines. The family’s main source of livelihood was farming and craft. They sourced clay on their land in the Brezje area near Nemška Vas, behind the so-called Mežnar’s Garden. Up until the post-WWII period, they made cockle stove tiles and assembled stoves. Changes in the dwelling culture and furnishings, and the advent of central heating, changed their trade: Ignacij still assembled stoves, but he no longer made stove tiles and customers had to buy them elsewhere. The family owned a wooden shed that housed a workshop and pottery kiln, where they made stove tiles, among other things. They made moulds for the stoves and nativity figurines themselves. Ignacij was assisted by his wife, Marija, who had worked at the brickworks in Ribnica until their wedding in 1953.
Ignacij made cockle stoves for customers from the vicinity of Ribnica, Sodražica, Loški Potok, Veliki Lašče, Kočevje and the area all the way to the river Kolpa.
Apart from cockle stoves, he installed fireplaces and round-shaped Luc’s stoves, mostly for schools, and also did tile laying.
